The Last TemptationThe last temptation the man had felt had been momentary and fleeting, but had been strong nonetheless.
He had been wandering the barrens in search of anything edible, but had only come up with a sparse collection of grubs, and herbs to help his ailing hands.
His wanderings lead him finally to the entrance of a thin, steep canyon. He looked in curiously, never having seen it before. A cool breeze caressed his face. On it, he could smell a scent that stirred a memory of a memory. He could clearly picture a face, a beautiful face he would always remember.
In recognition, he started forward. The path leading in was smooth and easy to traverse. Even the path felt familiar, under the thin soles of his sandals.
The canyon path eventually led out into a valley. It was isolated by the surrounding mesa. In stark contrast to the barrens he left behind, the valley was filled with a wild forest. The path followed down to the center of the valley.
He paused but only a moment, and then continued on.
